H2O: Footprints in the Sand (2008)

Takuma Hirose, who is just eleven years old and has already had to deal with many strokes of fate in his life, is one day confronted with the suicide of his mother. Shortly afterwards, he loses his sight for no medical reason, and the deep scar on his soul causes him to withdraw from his surroundings. As if this wasn’t bad enough, his father’s professional situation means that he barely has time to look after his blind son, which is why Takuma can no longer stay in Tokyo and is forced to move to his uncle in the countryside.

Once he arrives in the tranquil town, he enrols at a new school and meets several girls there, each of whom is special. His seat neighbour, Hayami Kohinata, who has no home of her own, is hated by everyone and despised as a demon. The obliging granddaughter of the village head, Hayami Kohinata, is tasked with showing him around the school grounds and making his start in his new class as easy as possible because of her position as class representative. There is also the mysterious Otoha, who calls herself the “spirit of the sound of time” and can only be perceived by Takuma. They all enrich his life and might even be able to heal his deep wounds at some point.

Der gerade erst elf Jahre alte Takuma Hirose, der in seinem Leben schon mit vielen Schicksalsschlägen kämpfen musste, wird eines Tages auch noch mit dem Selbstmord seiner Mutter konfrontiert. Kurz darauf hat er ohne medizinischen Grund sein Augenlicht verloren und die tiefe Narbe in seiner Seele führt dazu, dass er sich aus seinem Umfeld zurückzieht. Als wäre das alles nicht schon schlimm genug, hat sein Vater aufgrund seiner beruflichen Situation kaum noch Zeit, sich um seinen blinden Sohn zu kümmern, weshalb Takuma nicht länger in Tokio bleiben kann und gezwungen wird, zu seinem Onkel aufs Land zu ziehen.

In dem beschaulichen Ort angekommen, meldete er sich für eine neue Schule an und trifft dort mehrere Mädchen, die jede auf ihre eigene Art besonders sind. Seine Sitznachbarin Hayami Kohinata, die selbst kein richtiges Zuhause hat, wird von allen gehasst und als »Dämon« verachtet. Die zuvorkommende Enkelin des Dorfvorstehers, Kagura Hinata, bekommt wegen ihrer Position als Klassensprecherin die Aufgabe, ihn auf dem Gelände der Schule herumzuführen und ihm den Start in seine neue Klasse so einfach wie möglich zu gestalten. Außerdem wäre da noch die geheimnisvolle Otoha, die sich selbst als »Geist des Klangs der Zeit« bezeichnet und nur von Takuma wahrgenommen werden kann. Sie alle bereichern sein Leben und könnten es irgendwann vielleicht sogar schaffen, seine tiefen Wunden zu heilen.
